Interdisciplinary Workshop – Numerical Simulations, Applications, Resources

25. February 2021.

A workshop (web conference via ZOOM platform due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic) was held in Belgrade, Serbia on 25th February 2021  to address challenges in the presence, availability and application of computation resources dedicated to scientists and experts working at the University of Belgrade.

The workshop, hosted by the Joint Japan-Serbia Center for the Promotion of Science and Technology together with the Innovation Centre of Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy and the University of Belgrade brought together over twenty scientists from twelve research groups working at the University of Belgrade. Rector of University of Belgrade Prof. Ivanka Popović, Ph.D. gave a welcoming speech and expressed full support for the workshop agenda and goals.

The workshop successfully harnessed the enthusiasm and experience of participants who presented their research through online presentations and discussions. It was agreed to move forward quickly with overcoming the problems faced by local research groups regarding the limited and inefficient use of computing resources. Workshop delegates mandated a Steering Group to make a review of the recorded meeting video and produce survey material in the form of a detailed questionnaire which will be distributed to scientific research groups that participated in the Workshop.

The first meeting of the Workshop Steering Group, held immediately after the workshop, was attended by delegates from several research groups (volunteers) and the Director of Joint Japan-Serbia Center for the Promotion of Science and Technology with agenda to arrange writing of survey material and to support planning and preparation for the next Workshop at the end of 2021.

The main idea behind the Workshop was to provide a domestic forum for scientists and experts working in different fields of natural, applied, medical and human sciences with a need for numerical simulations in their research.

The workshop’s purpose, timetable and contents found resonance with the participants. As a result of the presentations, debate and focus on action-orientated outcomes, a series of decisions about the proposed evaluation study were made and endorsed.

Key outcomes by session

1. Presentations given by representatives of twelve research groups working at the University of Belgrade allowed participants to reflect on scientific computing and numerical modelling research projects. Discussions during the meeting provide feedback from participants on numerical methods they use in the research and problems they face by the limited and inefficient use of computing resources.

2. Need for improvement of communication and collaboration between individual scientists and between research Develop common objectives and shared agenda of activities with a goal to coordinate computing and human resources. Establish regular meetings to facilitate communication and defining new scientific ideas.

3. There is currently a lack of licensed software for scientific computing. This stresses the importance that the University of Belgrade should have a central repository of licensed scientific software available to all research groups at the University.

4. Need for more centralized scalar and vector-processing computing hardware for different platforms (UNIX, Windows OS) at the University of Belgrade which would support growing demand for complex numerical studies.

5. Lack of Ph.D. students with profound knowledge in programming and numerical algorithms. Need for improvement in computer science education programs for undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Belgrade.

6. All participants show interest in joint project application preparation for EU/National funding. Some of the participants indicated the need for a specific set of supporting activities in the joint project preparation stage of the project cycle to increase the application success rate.

Open Call for Two Junior Researcher Positions 2019

31. October 2019.

The Joint Japan-Serbia Center for the Promotion of Science and Technology of the University of Belgrade announces an open call for two junior researcher positions. The aim of the call is to promote excellence in science by recognizing the potential of outstanding junior researchers. The research positions are funded from a grant provided by the ITO Foundation for International Education Exchange from Tokyo and will provide support to the researchers for a period up to 12 months.

The ITO Foundation for International Education Exchange was established to fulfill the wish of the late Master Shinjo Ito, founder of the Shinnyo-en Buddhist order, to support young people with Integrity, Talent, and Originality (ITO). This support is provided for the purpose of promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations, with the ultimate aim of nurturing people who can contribute internationally. The University of Belgrade has been a proud partner of the ITO foundation for nearly a decade through the exchange of students and has now been given the possibility to extend that cooperation further.

The Joint Japan-Serbia Center for the Promotion of Science and Technology has a strong tradition of research in simulation science. This exciting field has been growing dynamically in the past period and may be applied in all areas of natural, technical, life and social sciences. The goal of this call is to develop new fields in simulation science by supporting young, talented researchers with a vision. The candidates should fulfill the following general requirements:

1. Hold a PhD degree
2. Not older than 40 at the time of the opening of the call
3. Experience in using advanced computer systems
4. Citizens of the Republic of Serbia
5. Knowledge of English and/or Japanese.

The candidates are kindly requested to submit the Application Form in electronic form no later than November 15, 2019 to the following e-mail address jjsckonkurs@rect.bg.ac.rs. The research proposal for a 12-month period should be detailed and should present the scope of the planned research, as well as further research plans in this field, with special emphasis on the planned utilization of the advanced computers.
